How Satya Is Helping Its Community Find Relief With All-Natural Skincare Products

Today we meet Patrice Mousseau, Owner & Creator of Satya Organic Skin Care. Satya is a proud Indigenous business that began after Patrice created an effective, natural solution to her daughter’s eczema, backed by science. Since then, the company has grown rapidly as more people have found relief with Satya’s balms, with Patrice identifying the power of community building, as well as her strong focus on sustainability, as key elements in her success.

Hello! Perhaps you could introduce yourself?

Hi, I’m Patrice Mousseau! I’m a conscious entrepreneur and the Owner & Creator of Satya Organic Skin Care, a skincare company that delivers NPN-approved, USDA Certified Organic products to serve those with eczema and chronic skin conditions. I’m also a single mom to my incredible daughter Esme and proud Anishinaabe woman of Fort William First Nation.

Before founding Satya, I had a career in broadcast journalism which included everything from talk shows in Toronto, to music shows on Sirius, to news with the CBC. I chose journalism as part of my personal vision to affect positive change. Then, I unintentionally became an entrepreneur when Esme developed eczema at only 8 months old.

Tell us more about your business.

Satya started with a need. My baby girl, Esme, developed eczema at only 8 months old and was scratching her arms and legs bloody. When I took her to the doctor, they prescribed a potent steroid cream for her delicate skin. I knew there had to be a better solution. So, I started looking at what was on the market shelves for something that was not only effective but also non-toxic, fragrance-free, and supported by scientific research. I couldn’t find anything good enough.

Drawing on my background in journalism, I started digging into existing medical research, traditional medicine, as well as the latest studies coming out of universities. I bought a $15 used crock pot off of Facebook Marketplace and started experimenting with different homemade formulas in my own kitchen. After a few iterations, I developed a balm that cleared Esme’s eczema up in two days. Satya Organic was born!

What are you working on at the moment? What are the future plans?

We recently introduced our newest product to Satya’s sustainable product family, The One Stick! We discovered that a lot of people didn’t think they could use Satya if they didn’t have eczema. To continue our mission of making clean, effective skin relief accessible for everyone, The One Stick is our new multipurpose product for all types of general skin stress, eliminating any barriers for customers when it comes to using products labelled ‘eczema relief’. Chapped lips, dry cuticles, thigh chafing, itchy bug bites — The One Stick has got you covered.

Today, we’re carried in over 900 retail stores across Canada including major Canadian retail platforms such as TheBay.com and Indigo.ca. Even more excitingly, we just officially launched in the U.S. earlier this year! Over the next few months, we’re looking forward to working directly with local U.S. retailers to bring Satya to even more stores across the country and increasing accessibility for our American customers.

Satya has also just been approved to be a part of CCAB’s Indigenous Trade Mission to Australia, a unique opportunity for Indigenous entrepreneurs to expand their businesses worldwide. We’re excited to introduce Satya’s story to a new network and continue expanding globally.

As an Indigenous business, we have a constant role in improving our products and practices to support a more sustainable future. At the moment, all Satya products are packaged in 100% compostable and reusable materials but we’re hoping to continue innovating new ways to eliminate waste and carbon production. Right now, we’re looking to partner with a local woman-owned business to offer a more sustainable way to deliver our subscription refill service!

What are your biggest challenges? What motivates you?

Being an entrepreneur always presents itself with challenges and there have definitely been days where I’ve dropped the ball. Being a single mom, I try to find balance in setting aside quality time to spend with my daughter while working constantly as Satya continues to grow. My daughter is definitely my inspiration and I want to show her that doing business the right way, ethically without harm to our people or the planet, is possible.

Our Satya community motivates me to keep going everyday. I want to continue empowering eczema and skin warriors around the world to choose clean, effective and safe alternatives for healing their skin, and to raise more awareness about the detrimental effects of using steroid creams. I’ve had people come up to me in tears because they’ve had eczema on their face and on their hands and it’s had such a deep physical and emotional impact on the way they live. When they tell me that Satya has been the only thing that was actually able to help them, that’s an incredibly huge motivator for me — knowing that I’m helping affect change in people’s lives.

What kind of marketing initiatives are the most effective for your business in terms of driving more sales?

Building a community is huge. We owe a lot of our success from our Satya family — moms, dads, grandparents, and eczema warriors young and old who religiously use Satya for themselves or their loved ones and continue to share their stories with everyone they know.

We see our customers as a close-knit community and we’re committed to creating a safe space for them to be vulnerable, speak out, and feel empowered. I think that has really helped customers to connect with Satya and drive genuine loyalty. We’re here for our customers for the long haul. As consumers ourselves, we believe everyone deserves to know what they’re putting on their skin and we’re using our business to change the way things are done in the skincare industry.

What is the best business advice you can share with others?

Find your community. Having great friends who also happen to run their own businesses has been a blessing . We laugh, cry and scream together! I try to find time to meditate every day, even just for 5 minutes. I feel like I am always running a mile a minute, so finding a few moments to take a deep breath helps to reset everything.

You also have to be okay with risk. Talk to other people who are in the industry you are thinking about and see where the gaps are and learn from them.

If this is something that is your passion then go for it! I love being an entrepreneur and I don’t think I would ever do anything else again. Every day is different and presents a new challenge. It can be stressful at times, but it’s worth it. Remember done is better than perfect, and don’t forget to eat breakfast!

Could you recommend any books, movies, podcasts, learning materials?

Echoing some of the other founders on here — build your community! Find like-minded people who you can support and who can also be your support system. Learn from the people you want to be like, even if it’s outside the industry you’re in. That’s the best way I’ve learned!
