How Tumble Allowed Its Founder to Build a Successful Business Around Her Creative Side

Today we meet Kyla Harper, founder and lead designer at Tumble. Tumble is a jewelry and home goods business that Kayla began back in 2015 to allow her to express her creative side. Having built the business herself from scratch, Kyla now has a team of 4 as it continues to grow, with Kyla harnessing social media channels like Instagram and more recently TikTok to find new and interesting audiences for Tumble’s products. How has Kyla managed to develop her business over time? What are her biggest challenges? Let’s find out!

Hello! Perhaps you could introduce yourself?

Hi I’m Kyla, the founder and lead designer at Tumble. I started this business in 2015 after leaving a corporate marketing job that I didn’t love! So glad I make the jump because I love what I get to do every day.

Tell us more about your business.

We design and create jewelry and home goods with the desire that our customers would experience joy through using or wearing our products. I have always been creative and after working in many jobs that didn’t give me creative freedom, I knew I wanted to start a business that allowed me to fully express my creative side! Nearly 6 years later we have a team of 4 people helping make the dream a reality!

What are you working on at the moment? What are the future plans?

Right now we are really focused on developing the home goods side of the business. It is a lot different from the jewelry side, so we are trying to streamline our production process and figure out the best way to share our work with our community and beyond!

What are your biggest challenges? What motivates you?

I worked alone in this business for a really long time, so it is tricky getting used to having people working with me, even though I am so thankful for them. I have to be much more future-minded and more visionary, so I can lead the team well. I am constantly juggling the immediate needs of the business with more long-term plans and dreams! It’s a wild ride but I want to provide job stability and benefits to my team in the long run so I keep pushing forward because it is about more than just me these days.

What kind of marketing initiatives are the most effective for your business in terms of driving more sales?

For a long time, we focused primarily on Instagram and built a beautiful community there that loves and supports our work. But as of late we are actually having a ton of fun with TikTok. There are so many inspiring content creators on the app and it’s been really fun to try out a new medium to share our products!

Can you share what tools, apps, or other useful things you are using in your business?

I am an old-school planner type. If I don’t write it down, I will forget about it. Appointed Co. makes a Year Task Planner that I swear by! We love a giant whiteboard to brainstorm ideas, designs and concepts. Our team has a joint digital calendar and a group chat that we all share, so we know what is happening at all times and have a weekly all-team meeting.

What is the best business advice you can share with others?

Don’t quit on a bad day.

Could you recommend any books, movies, podcasts, learning materials?

Tiktok has a great business community and people give such good biz advice. Podcasts like Dare To Lead, How I Built This, Second Life, and Work Party are great resources to learn from those that have done what we are trying to do! We love creating vision boards with our team to create visual reminders of what we are working so hard for.
